It’s the end of February and we’re coming up to the one-year anniversary of the community lockdown and the closure of our church. To say it’s been a tough year is an understatement!!
I don’t know about you, but I hit the wall on Wednesday. The phrase that kept going through my brain was “I need a vacation from life.” I wanted all my concerns to go away, to forget all the things I have to do and to escape from my worries. But, unfortunately, as much as we might wish to escape from life, it just doesn’t happen that way.
Every morning we get up and have to begin again. Happily, the snow and the sunshine have given me encouragement and I’m feeling better. It’s amazing how the lows can become highs and the highs can become lows. It’s like we need to be able to ride the waves of these ever changing emotions and understand that nothing ever stays the same.
This is when I find so much solace in my faith. The promises God made to Abraham and Sarah are the same promises God makes to us. We live and work in that tradition and know that no matter what, God walks beside us.
I hope that when you hit the wall you’ll be patient and loving to yourself and not beat yourself up when you think you’re “lazy” or “unproductive.” Give your concerns to God and treat yourself as lovingly as God treats you.
Doing on-line worship has been a blessing and a challenge for us. It’s a blessing because it lets us gather together even when we can’t do it in person. It’s a challenge because not everyone finds it engaging, satisfying or inspiring. Also, the technology required to make this go well is a steep learning curve. It’s also a challenge for Rick and me because we’re not seeing your reactions. We miss the feedback we usually get at coffee time.
All that being said, I’d loved to hear from you about what kind of worship you’d like to try. Another Google Meet/Zoom worship? Outside worship? Small group worship? Would you like to read scripture, offer prayers or preach a sermon? Is there a theme you would like explored? Normally, I don’t get a lot of feedback about what is happening in worship and church events, but I want to encourage you to be in touch with me or Rick. We are open to any and all suggestions.
Coffee and Chat takes place via Zoom on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. hosted by me. Here’s the invite: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86480438189?pwd=YjRta2VoVzh3eU5pM1FSK1hWWjZMdz09.
The Monday Stitchers will be meeting in person on Monday, March 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please let Elly Leben at firstname.lastname@example.org know if you’ll be attending.
As February turns into March, the promise of Spring is around the corner. May this encourage us as we continue to stay safe for the sake of others.
In the love and friendship of Christ,
Rev. Dr. Christine Johnson
